Expanding Digital Access in the Shawano Area Through Techquity WI
On Friday April 3rd, United Way partnered with Shawano Area Matthew 25 and Safe Haven of Shawano County to take an important step toward closing the digital divide in the Shawano Area. Through the Techquity WI program, 16 individuals received loaned, high‑quality refurbished devices designed to improve access to technology and online resources.
For many recipients, access to a personal device represents more than just hardware—it opens doors to education, employment, and stability. Reliable technology is increasingly essential for tasks such as applying for jobs, accessing services, completing schoolwork, and staying connected to community resources.
A Story of Opportunity and Determination
One story from the distribution event especially stood out. A working mother shared that she had dreamed of returning to school for years but faced constant barriers. Balancing her work schedule, her children’s school commitments, and the limited availability of public computer access made completing homework feel overwhelming.
Now, with a device of her own, that barrier has been removed. She is enrolling in coursework this spring to complete her general education requirements and is exploring two career paths—early childhood education and dental hygiene. Her story reflects the powerful role that equitable access to technology can play in helping individuals pursue long‑term goals.
Supporting Rural Communities
Programs like Techquity WI are especially impactful in rural areas, where access to technology and public resources can be limited. United Way is grateful for the collaboration that made this initiative possible and the community partners who helped ensure devices reached those who need them most.
Special thanks to United Way of Wisconsin and United Way Fox Cities for their support in bringing this program to the Shawano Area and expanding digital opportunity for local residents.
