Digital Access Matters in 2026

In November 2025, United Way partnered with NWTC–Shawano to host our first Techquity WI distribution event. This collaboration marked an important step in our shared commitment to improving digital access in our community. Since then, we are proud to announce several additional device distribution events planned in the coming months. These include partnerships with SAM25 and Safe Haven to serve their clients, a public event with the Shawano County Library, and a return to NWTC–Shawano in May.

Why Techquity WI Matters

As we move through 2026, digital access is no longer a convenience—it is a necessity. The average cost of a computer in 2025 was approximately $630, with a reliable laptop suitable for office or school use costing closer to $800. For someone earning $15 per hour, that represents 42 to 54 hours of work before they can afford a device assuming they had no other bills to pay.

Yet, access to a personal computer is essential for everyday life. Today’s systems and services are built around digital platforms, requiring consistent and reliable access to technology for tasks many of us take for granted, including:

Financial Management

  • Online banking
  • Budgeting and financial planning tools

Healthcare

  • Scheduling medical appointments
  • Participating in virtual visits
  • Researching health conditions, symptoms, and treatment options

Education and Workforce Development

  • Enrolling in online certificate or training programs
  • Learning new workplace technologies, including emerging tools like AI
  • Completing school assignments and homework

Closing the Digital Divide

Access to a personal device can significantly impact a person’s employability, financial stability, and health outcomes—especially in rural communities where services and opportunities may be geographically limited.

In a world where technology touches nearly every aspect of daily life, access should not be a barrier. Programs like Techquity WI play a critical role in ensuring families across our service area have the tools they need to succeed and thrive.
